Derrick "Deke" Kroll
Deke was a man of great passion—for life, family, friends, running, and enabling the youth of La Crosse to achieve their dreams. Sadly, he passed away on November 18th, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.
At an early age, Deke recognized the importance of providing a safe, fun and welcoming environment for local youth. It's no wonder that Deke chose a career with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse, where he served as Director of Operations. Deke had a tremendous zest for life and dedication to helping the children of the Boys & Girls Club.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse turns no child away. For every $20 made by Glow in the Deke, the cost of one child's entire year of membership at the club is covered. And together with the Hope Lives Foundation, an annual scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a local young adult whose life was affected by cancer.
Beginning in 2010, friends of Deke Kroll organized the first "Deke's Run". After the 2011 run, the Hope Lives Foundation became involved as the event producer. The Hope Lives Foundation changed the format to a glow in the dark run/walk and added other events, gradually growing participation. In 2013, we were honored to host 2,000 Glowers.
